During my time working for cultural foundation Stichting Mediamatic in Amsterdam, I worked chiefly in Mycelium design: creating materials using the vegetative part of various mushroom species.
Using biological waste such as husks and straw, we grew fungus, which bound the waste together to create spongy materials which we used for sound and heat insulation on site. I worked in the clean-lab – a laboratory which uses well filtered air to ensure that the fungus we grow is not contaminated.
I also helped develop a process of using waste from beer brewing to grow fungus, and designed an exhibition of the processes. In a personal experiment I was also able to grow mycelium on human hair.
